Our Process: Built on a Solid Foundation

We take pride in doing the job right — from the ground up.

Excavation

Proper depth ensures a stable foundation for your project.

The depth of excavation depends on two key factors:

  • Soil type – Clay requires deeper excavation for stability, while sandy soil needs less.
  • Intended use – Heavier loads like driveways and retaining walls call for deeper excavation, while lighter areas like patios and walkways need less depth.

The Base

A strong, stable foundation is essential for long-lasting results.

After excavation, the area is carefully filled with a base material chosen to match the intended use—whether it’s for a driveway, patio, or walkway. The base must support the load, allow for proper drainage, and be compacted in multiple layers using the right equipment. This prevents shifting and settling, especially important in our Canadian freeze-thaw climate.

Bedding Material

Provides a smooth surface and helps water drain properly.

The next step in the construction process is laying a layer of sand or fine stone aggregate. Choosing the right bedding material and installing it properly is essential to the long-term performance of your stonework, whether you’re using interlock, natural stone, or building retaining walls.

This layer creates a smooth, level surface for the stones to rest on and helps water drain efficiently into the gravel base below, preventing pooling and shifting over time.

Edging & Jointing

The finishing stage of your project

Edge restraint can be installed in a few different ways to keep your patio or walkway securely in place. We may use a specialized concrete border that locks the edge stones in position and bonds them together. Alternatively, pre-made edging strips can be fastened with long metal spikes along the sides of the pavers.

To finish the project, a special jointing sand is swept into the gaps between the stones to help lock them in. In most cases, we use polymeric sand, which hardens when moistened—creating a durable, cement-like bond that resists shifting.
